1. XC. A lean year for RNRM Riders in the traditional XC discipline, with only three riders regularly turning out in either RN or RM colours. Sgt Ollie Yates, returning to the sport after a break of some years, has competed the whole season in Sport finishing 12 nationally and 3rd regionally; with a shift in racing priorities PO Smith only made 3 of the national rounds and continues to prop up the rear of the Masters’ field. At the other end of Masters Lt Cdr Al Lovell has had an excellent year finishing 7th in BMBS and is currently 6th in the points rankings. With operational commitments and a aerodrome crash getting in the way WO Arey has been an irregular appearer(?) 2. In September the RNRMCA hosted the I/S championships which, despite the Army not bothering to turn up, was an event where those who took podium places are well deserving of applause, the guys from Shred Events put together a mammoth course which tested even the most accomplished rider. The final descent was just short of a mile of pure Downhill and completing the four laps meant climbing 1700 mts. 3. Special mention should also go Lt Cdr Bingham, LET Bagwell who, coming from Hampshire weren't used to climbing so for them a Lap of the course was a step well out of their comfort zones. CPO Woods not only earned himself a free trip in an ambulance but also managed to get himself back down to the first aid tent with a dislocated shoulder and broken elbow. 4. Enduro. Things have been more successful in the endurance events with representation at the European Solo Championships, Most CRC endurance rounds, Twentyfour12 as well as our usual outing to Eastnor for Mountain Mayhem. 5. The RN was represented at 12 and 24hr events throughout the year PO Smith rode 12hr solo at both the European Solo Champs and Twentyfour12. PO Teasdale has managed to juggle commitments on board one of her majesty’s newest ships with a season of endurance events including soloing Bristol 12hr and doing the big one riding 24hr solo at Mountain Mayhem. Another recent returnee, Lt Edmondson rode pairs at Torq 12:12 and rounded off his returning season soloing at Dawn till Dusk finishing an extremely credible 7th place. 6. Mid-summer weekend saw the 14th running of Mountain Mayhem and this year we were able to field two mixed teams, although due to the usual last minute operational changes and an unfortunate altercation with a car for one of the team members we were forced to field non serving members to get two teams to the line, despite the majority of rides being new to the event we managed to get both teams into the top ten with a potential fourth place for RN 1 had it not been for an admin error causing a lap not to be counted. The managers of next year’s Mayhem Team will have to be more aware of the rules and ensure any team with possibility of poduiming is within the rules. 7. With the Mayhem entries being gifted to us by the organisers, the money set aside for that event was used to fund an official entry to Twentyfour12 in Plymouth at the end of Jul. This event, perhaps helped by it’s proximity to the dockyard, saw a strong showing of RN riders. In addition to the funded team for 4 for the 24hr there were “un-official” entries from HMS TRIUMPH(team of 4 – 12hr), two teams representing Culdrose (just for fun 6 – 24hr) as well as entries solo entries from Al Lovel and Rob Smith. 8. Mention must be made of Lt Cdr Bingham who tested marital harmony twice this year, firstly riding together At Are You Tough Enough and then as a pair at Torq 12/12 finishing 6th in the mixed cat. 9. Down Hill(DH)/Trials. MTB Sec has been approached by both DH & Trials riders but no results know at this time. |
