Early season racing saw Al Lovell (reigning Plymouth Command MTB Champion) finishing in top three overall after 3 gruelling rounds held at Newnham Park. The club also benifited from an appearance by Phill Ferguson who came in an impressive 4th in the youth catagory.
The Soggy Bottom series of races endorsed by British Cycling attract large fields competing in a variety of categories from Juvenile to Grand Veteran. A cross country course the aim is to complete the course in the fastest time possible with the differing categories required to complete a variety of distances (laps). Sunday 15th March saw the last race in the series and Al Lovell was the sole Senior RNRMCA rider competing on the day. In the youth catagory Phill Ferguson finished in 4th place narrowly missing the top three but a very creditable result nonetheless from this young up and coming RNRMCA rider.
Reporting duties for the day fell to Mark Gorman who very kindly submitted the following article along with the photographs. Sunday saw the final event in the Soggy Bottom mountain bike series in the South West. Unusually, the weather in Newnham Park was warm and sunny. This being the case, the course was fast and dusty in places. The sole club entrant was Al Lovell, reigning Plymouth Command champion. Al continued his good Winter form, always amongst the front runners in the Masters category, working his way up to 3rd position at times. However, a couple of minor crashes put paid to the possibility of a podium finish on this occasion. A solid seventh place, in what was the strongest field of the three race series, was a fine result. This placing combined with sixth and fourth in the previous rounds, earned him third place in the series, and bodes well for the coming season. Follow this link to British Cycling race report
Congratulations to Al for another job well done. If you are interested in getting involved in MTB racing with the RNRMCA then take a look at the message board to see who is currently racing, ask some questions then give it a go.
Many thanks to Mark Gorman for the photographs and details of the race.
