Road/TT Race Secretary’s Report for the 2008 Season
1. Road Racing Report. a. General An improvement on previous years with four 1st claim riders gaining BCF ranking points: South West Region Ranking – 3rd Category South West Region Ranking – 4th Category South West Region Ranking – Team b. Annual Road Race Championships The Annual Road Race Championships were held at Merryfield Airfield (5th consecutive year) on Fri 9 May 08. The event also incorporated the RAFCC championship and entries of 55 riders were 18 up on the previous year and the standard even higher as it featured RAFCC, some Army CU and civilian riders. Both races were highly contested in fairly good conditions. 15th Sean Childs RNRMCA 2. Time Trial Report. Time Trialling continues to be the dominant discipline within the RNRMCA due to the interest level and high standard of ‘testers’ we currently have within the club which leads to us raising our targets each year. We set a very high target in 2008 and although we gained successes, came up short at pinpointed key events, probably due to us being a little too ambitious for our target audience. Attendance at all major RN championships and Open events however had greatly increased. a. Inter-Service 10 & 25 Championships and CSBAR The Inter-Service 10 & 25 weekend was hosted by us and incorporated into the Team Velocity weekender near Portsmouth. We were once again dominant, even though we were hit with riders having left the service, illnesses and mechanical problems. In the 10 championships we won the men’s individual and team titles for the 4th consecutive year (including a 1-2 in the men) and finished runners up in the ladies individual. The following day in the 25 championship, we again completed the men’s individual and team titles for the 4th consecutive year (another double) and again finished runners up in the ladies individual. The CSBAR in its 2nd year saw us win the individual title, however we lost out on the team title to the RAFCC. b. National Championship This year saw more riders compete at individual National Championships than ever before, however we came up short on winning a team medal (especially at our target race the National 100). We also lost our Welsh 12 championship team title when the RNRMCA finished as runners up and slipped down a little further in the BBAR team rankings in 9th. However four riders gained qualifying times which was more than in any previous year. c. South West District Championships In the 10 champs we came away with both the individual men and team titles and also repeated the process in the 50 championship. d. RNRMCA Champs Participation was at an all time high and more riders qualified for the RN BAR than in any previous year. The Navy Cup in its 2nd year also saw 9 teams enter with HMS DRAKE retaining their title. 3. Sportive Report. Sportives were not as well represented as in previous years and attendance at the Combined Services event was disappointing. This may be due to the rise in entry fees or clash in fixtures with other cycling events. 4. Key Results. a. The Navy Weekender (Open 16 and 25 Mile Sporting TTs) was held near HMS RALEIGH on Sat 13 & Sun 14 Sep 08. The event was very successful and attracted over 30 riders from local clubs for each day’s racing. Thanks to all the RNRMCA club members who gave up their time to assist. Feedback from the riders was very positive next years event will take place on the same course, but early in the year in March 09. Our event organiser Sean Childs will be looking for volunteers to assist once again. New records achieved during 2008: Distance Date Rider Record Type Time/Distance Men: Ladies:
a. RN Points Series Trophy will now include the Navy Cup for 2009. The 7 Rds will be as follows: b. The format for the RN BAR Trophy will remain the same. c. The Navy Cup will now consist of a 2 up TTT. Riders have to be current RNRMCA members to qualify (serving or associate) and they can choose a partner. A separate category will included for teams from the same Unit. 10. Recreational Travel. Not yet confirmed as the calendar has not been fully competed 11. Representation Rankings. a. Points awarded as follows: i. 1 point awarded for completing any Open CTT, BCF RR or Sportive. 12. Public Relations. PR has stagnated this year, as I did not have time to input into Navy News, however the fantastic website continues to grow at strength, so a big BZ for the Webmaster for his various articles and reports. 13. Outlook. The commitment and enthusiasm within the club continues to grow from strength to strength and all members are encouraged to support as many of our forthcoming events as possible and where applicable assist with the organisational posts and responsibilities. 2008 has surpassed 2007 with more riders competing in events than in any other previous year. We still need to identify and recruit more youngsters and ladies if we are to flourish. 14. Qualifications and External Posts. CPOPT Sean Childs South West District Committee Member
Lt Simon Paget CTT Full Time Keeper 15. Summary. Although still a relatively successful season, RN Cycling did not have its best season. Commitment still continues from the die hards within the club who race and support the club week in week out throughout the season, bur we need to spread the message around the bizarres that RN Cycling is healthy, enjoyable and here to stay for a long time.
