RNRMCA Team of the year 2007 Print

wales-groupOutstanding success story

Still buoyant from their success at winning the Combined Services Team of the Year the Time Trial Squad from RNRMCA have recently been informed that they are to be afforded further honours as Royal Navy Team of the Year.

Each year every Sports Association is invited to nominate outstanding athletes and officials who have excelled in their respective sports. At the recent Combined Services Sports Award HRH The Duchess of Cornwall awarded the prize to the successful team in recognition of their achievements. Representing the Senior Service throughout 2007. The athletes selected to receive the award are amongst the top performing riders within the association today and were rewarded for regularly representing the Service at a range of events throughout the UK.

Whilst Service awards are not available to Associate Members it is recognised that there remains a strong team of associate members who also represent the team regularly and contributed significantly to the team success in 2007.

The Team Captain CPO PTI Sean Childs won further recognition being nominated in the Male Sports Person of the year category.

Sean had no difficulty in accepting a runners up position in this category, safe in the knowledge that he had played such a major part in building the 2007 team.

The second award of Royal Navy Team of the Year is scheduled to be made on-board HMS Victory in due course the following letter of congratulations has already been received from the Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Sir Adrian Johns KCB CBE ADC.

"I was thrilled and delighted to hear of your success in winning the award for the Combined Services Sports Team for 2007.  This is fitting recognition of the increasingly high competitive standards achieved by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Cycling Association Time Trial Team in recent years.  There is clearly an abundance of talent that has been carefully nurtured by you and the team Captain CPOPT Sean Childs and you should all be extremely proud of the team's dominance of the inter-services arena and their notable achievements at national level.

With the pressure of current operational tempo, it is heartening to see how much effort that your team are prepared to devote outside of their demanding jobs to the sport of cycling and ultimately to representing the Navy.  It is clear that Royal Navy and Royal Marines cycling is at an all time high and I very much hope you continue in the same vein in the years to come.  Please pass on my personal congratulations to everyone involved in the team.

Well done indeed!"

The Club President Capt Mark Beverstock added his own appreciation and recognition of the work all members had applied during the 2007 season which ultimately resulted in this team success.

Where to from here?

Undoubtedly a hard act to follow but with continued effort both on and off the bike 2008 stands to be just as successful. Inspiration should be taken from the guys at the top no matter what level of the beloved sport you participate at. Join now as a rider or if able to commit more time why not apply to join the Committee? Cycling is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance with more coverage of major events and more people commuting than ever before. So if your doing it then do it in red, white and blue.
